Performers

Suzanne Allen - Suzanne holds both a Bachelors Degree and a Masters Degree in Music from Indiana University as well as a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Indiana University Southeast. While she has remained active as a vocalist in church music, her directing career has taken her to companies such as New York City Opera, l'Opéra de Montreal , Florida Grand Opera and Cincinnati Opera. Ms. Allen most recently wrote the stage adaptation and directed The Great Poochini for the Palm Beach Opera. Her other directing credits include La Cenerentola, The Merry Widow and La Bohème (Palm Beach Opera), La Bohème (Opera Philadelphia), and Carmen and Elixir of Love (Cartersville Opera). Choreography credits include The Mikado and Don Giovanni (Kentucky Opera), and Peter Grimes (Michigan Opera Theatre). In addition to directing and choreography, Ms. Allen has also written supertitle translations for operas including Die Walküre, Andrea Chènier and La Bohème (Virginia Opera).Suzanne first encountered flamenco when she was hired for a production of Carmen and decided to take a flamenco dance class to add to her movement vocabulary. From that point on, she became completely enamored with the form and continued her dance studies with Mariquita Flores and Victorio Korjan. Upon moving to Louisville , Suzanne joined Flamenco Louisville and most recently brought her vocal talents to the genre. She has studied flamenco voice with Marija Temo, Chayito and Angela Ponzio.Paul T. Carney - Paul grew up in Louisiana surrounded by music, but discovered a love for percussion while living in Chicago (where he received a BS in Communication from Northwestern University). He studied with Cuban jazz percussionist Dede' Sampaio, accompanied at the Giordano Dance Center of Evanston, IL, and has since worked with musicians in New York, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas. After being exposed to flamenco through his wife, Diana Dinicola, and being inspired in part by a live performance by Manuel Soler, Paul began exploring flamenco cajon, and has been performing and accompanying with Flamenco Louisville since 2004. In 2007 Paul began playing flamenco guitar, and has worked as an accompanist and as a solo musician. His teachers and/or fellow performers have included Marija Temo, Antonio Vargas, John Lawrence, Richard Marlow, Chayito Champion, and Juan del Gastor (Juan Amaya). After 15 years in film & video production, Paul operates Body Mechanics Massage Therapy Clinic, and is the Assistant Director at Fons Vitae Publishing.Lisa Canter- Lisa is a Louisville, Kentucky native and has been a student of flamenco since 2000. She has studied with master artists Antonio Vargas, Antonio Granjero, Timo Lozano, Marija Temo and Chayito Champion. In 2003 she participated in the Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque in New Mexico and studied with Marisol and Joaquin Encinias. As a member of Flamenco Louisville, she has performed at numerous venues including Indiana University Southeast, the Oldham County Arts Center and the regular flamenco floor show at the downtown Marriott in Louisville. Lisa has also been a guest artist with the local group, Camino Flamenco, under the direction of Christina Smith. Lisas other performance accomplishments include being a member of the Imperial Guard and Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps as well as a competitive ice dancer.Paula Collins - Paula began dancing at age 5 under the direction of her cousin Barbara Collins. In 2001 she was introduced to Flamenco at Ballet Espanol. Paula was a founding member of Flamenco Louisville, where she continues to study, choreograph and teach Flamenco. She travels regularly to Spain and has studied with Juana Amaya, Farruquito and Carmen Ledesma. For 5 years Paula attended the National Institute of Flamenco in Albuquerque, New Mexico and has studied with Joaquin and Marisol Encinias, Adela Campallo, Vero La India, and Farruca. In 2009 she performed as a company dancer for the Louisville Opera in La Traviata and has produced shows for the Foust Artist Series at Georgetown College and the Governors Scholar Program in 2007 and 2008. Paula continues to perform regularly and has appeared alongside Maestro Antonio Vargas, Chayito Champion and Marija Temo. Currently, she travels through the region performing as a soloist and company dancer with Flamenco Louisville as well as teaching the art of Flamenco in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.Diana Dinicola - Diana holds a diploma for the advanced level intensive training program at the Fundacion Cristina Heeren de Arte Flamenco in Sevilla, Spain. She has attended the National Flamenco Institute at the University of New Mexico (2002, 2003, 2004, 2006) and returns to Spain yearly for continuing professional development. She performs regularly and has appeared with dancers Antonio Vargas and Angel Muñoz; musicians Chayito Champion, Ricardo Marlow, John Lawrence, Arturo Martinez and Jesus Montoya. Diana is a co-founder of Flamenco Louisville and an active educator, teaching flamenco dance in Louisville, Lexington, Cincinnati, for the KY Governors School for the Arts and the Louisville Ballet. In addition, she is a Showcase Kentucky and Kentucky Arts Council Education Roster artist taking flamenco into the schools as a medium for teaching core Arts & Humanities curriculum. She also works with underserved communities in Louisville and throughout the state through ArtsReach. Diana trained as a theatre major at Northwestern University where she received a BS in Communications and her teaching certification. She is a member of the inaugural class of the Kentucky Center for the Arts Artist Educator Seminars, the prototype for a national model preparing artists as in-school educators. Diana is a veteran arts administrator and holds an MBA from Emory University. In 2008, she was recognized as a Hero of Diversity by WHAS-TV and the Kentucky Lottery. She also completed the improvisation intensive, Crossing the Chasm from Theatre to Life with Alan Arkin.Cross-disciplinary collaborations include work with Specific Gravity Ensemble: Elevator Plays³ (actor/dancer, Corazon del Baile) and choreographer/actor for interlifechangecycle which premiered at the Humana Festival of New Plays in March, 2009. Diana provided castanet and movement coaching for singer Ruxandra Donores appearance as Carmen in the Cincinnati Operas 2009 season. Diana was the choreographer and principal dancer for Kentucky Operas production of La Traviata in September, 2009. She has appeared with the band Ut Gret and collaborates regularly with Ruric Amari and the Samovar Dance Troupe.Diana is on the Kentucky Arts Councils Performing Arts Roster & on the faculty of the Louisville Ballet.Grace Mican-Work - Grace began studying flamenco at the age of 6. After trying ballet, she discovered that flamenco better suited her fiery personality. She enrolled in classes at Ballet Español in 2001, studying under Mara Maldonado and Graciela Perrone. Grace has continued to grow with Diana Dinicola at Flamenco Louisville. Grace has studied and performed with Marija Temo, Antonio Vargas, Chayito Champion and Angela Ponzio. As a member of Flamenco Louisville, she has performed at numerous venues including Indiana University Southeast, the Oldham County Arts Center and the regular flamenco floor show at the downtown Marriott in Louisville. Grace is a student at Atherton High School, class of 2012, and will be attending Depaul University starting in the Fall.Larissa Mora - Larissa began her dance training in her home town of Owensboro, KY at age 4. Throughout her middle and high school years she danced as a company member with the Owensboro Dance Theatre. She attended Governors School for the Arts, Jazz on Tap and was awarded a full scholarship to study at Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago for two consecutive summers. Larissa danced professionally in Chicago with Gus Giordano, Deeply Rooted, and Ensemble Español. She discovered flamenco while studying Spanish at Northeastern Illinois University. While dancing with Ensemble Español she had the opportunity to attend the American Spanish Dance Festival and studied from guest artists Juan Mata, Ana Gonzalez, Timo Lozano and Edo. As a member of Flamenco Louisville, she has performed at numerous venues including Indiana University Southeast, the Oldham County Arts Center and the regular flamenco floor show at the downtown Marriott in Louisville as well as with the Kentucky Opera. Larissa currently works as a Spanish language interpreter.Mary Ann Silveri - Mary Ann's thirst for flamenco became apparent when she was introduced to the Academy of Ballet Español, under the direction of Mara Maldonado in 1996 and later became a company member. Mary Ann has studied flamenco in Madrid, Spain; Chicago, Illinois and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Some of her private instruction has included Maestros Antonio Vargas, Timo Lozano, and Antonio Hidalgo. She has also studied with Adelo Campello, Jose Junco, Antonio Granjero, Angél Muñoz, Angela Ponzio and local dancer, Diana Dinicola. Mary Ann is currently a member of Flamenco Louisville, under the direction of Diana Dinicola and continues to perform and study at this Academy. As a member of Flamenco Louisville, she has performed at numerous venues including Indiana University Southeast, the Oldham County Arts Center and the regular flamenco floor show at the downtown Marriott in Louisville. Mary Ann has also been a guest artist with the local group, Camino Flamenco, under the direction of Christina Smith. Mary Ann is a Clinical Pharmacist at Baptist Hospital East and also an accomplished pianist and mixed media artist.

Blu pours on the tapas, sangria and Flamenco dancing . . .If you have a fondness for fine footwork and food, you should check out Blu Italian Grille's (280 W. Jefferson St.) monthly Spanish Night. On the second Friday of each month, from 7 to 9 p.m., Blu serves a special tapas menu and house-made sangria while Flamenco Louisville, a local dance and musical group, performs."It's an intense experience to watch," said Royston Green, restaurant manager at Blu, located in the Louisville Marriott Downtown. Flamenco is a style of music and dance native to the Andalusian region of Spain.The performers hail from Flamenco Louisville, an organization devoted to all things flamenco including classes, workshops and professional performers. Diana Dinicola, a co-founder of Flamenco Louisville, will be part of the performance group as well."We've been creating and rehearsing like crazy," said Dinicola. "We can't wait for that moment when the whole performance connects with the audience."Dinicola, who has extensive training from multiple flamenco programs, has traveled the world to perform and interact with other celebrated flamenco artists. She is also an active educator, teaching flamenco in underserved communities in Louisville, Ky., and throughout the state through ArtsReach.The performance repertoire is based on a system of song forms, or "palos," which allow improvisations around commonly known musical structures. The artists will perform via "cante" (singing), "baile" (dancing) and "toca" (playing of musical instruments). "La Esencia Del Flamenco" incorporates elements of melody, poetry, rhythm and movement into one complete presentation.It is a Center Stage event hosted by the President's Commission on the Status of Women, which provides educational opportunities about specific issues and events that enhance a general awareness and appreciation for diversity on campus. The commission also promotes an awareness of women's issues and oversees the TTU Women's Center and programming of interest to women in the community.Leslie Burk of the TTU history department staff and member of the programming and publicity subcommittee for the commission, wrote the Center Stage request to bring the dancers to TTU. Burk has danced in the Middle Eastern style for nearly 20 years and the flamenco style for seven."Part of our focus with the commission is bringing diversity to campus through educational programming," said Burk. "This performance is a great mix of multicultural diversity and empowerment. Flamenco is a very empowering dance."In conjunction with "La Esencia," there will also be a quick-start introductory flamenco class taught by Dinicola during dead hour the day of the performance. But on June 19th, for one phenomenal evening they had everything to do with each other!Since moving to Kentucky in 1999, Home At Last and Flamenco have been two of my greatest passions. Many folks have heard of Flamenco, but still aren't quite sure what it is, often confusing it with other types of Latin dances like Tango or Salsa. Flamenco is a style of music and dance that originated in the Andalusian region of Spain, combines guitar, singing, percussion, and elevates it to an extraordinary level. Most of the time, these two, very different interests have very little to do one another. Animal advocacy and Spanish guitar? Homeless animals and crazy fast footwork? Sanctuary life and castanets?I think you get the idea.But on June 19th, for one phenomenal evening they had everything to do with each other!Flamenco Louisville, accompanied by musicians from Alma Gitana, put on an amazing show at Natasha's Bistro in Lexington all to benefit Home At Last. It was an evening filled with inspired performances, gorgeous costumes, and of course, lots of passion!Dancers Lisa Canter, Paula Collins, Diana Dinicola, Grace Mican- Work, Mary Ann Silveri, and Charlie Marshall brought out all the stops, using fans, shawls, hats and castanets and changing from one extraordinary costume to another. Guitarists Paul Carney, Duane Corn, and Bob Elliott provided the stellar music that didn't stop all evening long! And the beautiful Suzanne Allen captivated us with her strong, beautiful voice and her continuous reminders to help the animals. Everyone who came out that night to support the animals was in awe of the performance and agreed that it was one of the best evenings Home At Last has been lucky enough to be a part of.For me, it was especially touching, because as I looked around the room, it was the sum of my last 11 years.
